How to Reduce Overstay Fine in Dubai

Given that Dubai is quite multicultural, you’re more likely to see foreign residents than nationals. However, both tourists and residents must follow certain rules strictly to remain in the UAE.

If you live in the UAE, be sure that your travel papers like passports and visas are current. You should renew or extend your residence visa before it expires to prevent getting fined for overstaying your visa.

In the UAE, it is prohibited to possess an expired resident visa. Although there are various reasons why your resident visa might expire without being immediately renewed,

  • Losing one’s job
  • Having a police case
  • Having a travel ban
  • Having an ongoing investigation
  • Absconding

The above are some of the reasons for why residents shouldn’t wait to renew or extend their visas until the last minute. By doing so, they may avoid any potential problems that could arise down the road.

Visa Overstay Fines

Overstay penalties are applied to individuals on tourist/visit visas or people with UAE residence visas. The fee for overstaying for both categories is different. Let’s look at how each visa category is penalized based on overstay status.

Tourist Overstay Fines

In the UAE, tourists/visit visas usually have a ten-day grace period, and fines are not levied during this time. As a result, they will be charged on a regular basis after their visa expires:

  • AED 100 ($27) – service fee
  • AED 200 ($55) – the first day of overstay after 10 days grace period
  • AED 100 ($27) – each subsequent day

UAE Resident Overstay Fines

Resident visa holder are also given a period of grace to take necessary action with regards to visa status like:

  • Renewing or extending the visa
  • Modifying the visa status
  • Leaving the country
  • Changing the visa status

There is a 30-day period after the expiration of your UAE residence visa during which you are exempt from fines, but the fines begin to accrue as soon as you exit the country.

  • AED 25 ($7) – daily fine after grace period
  • AED 50 ($14) – daily fine after 6 months of overstay
  • AED 100 ($27) – daily fine after one year of overstay
